Characteristics of Acrylic
1、 Introduction to the Performance of Acrylic Sheet
1. Acrylics "is a transliteration of the English term for acrylic and methacrylic chemicals, commonly known as" specially treated organic glass ". In the field of plastics, acrylic refers to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is a thermoplastic engineering plastic with excellent comprehensive properties. It is mostly used in the form of sheets for outdoor and indoor signs. In the application industry, its materials generally appear in the form of particles, sheets, pipes, etc.
2. The characteristics of acrylic: excellent optical properties (with a transmittance of up to 92%); High surface gloss, bright color, fullness, smoothness, and good hardness; Chemical corrosion resistance; Stable performance and not easily deformed; Complete product range, rich and colorful colors, and various surface effects; Stable physical properties (easy to shape, strong plasticity); Strong weather resistance, UV resistance, and resistance to oxidation (strong resistance to high and low temperature deformation, resistant to high temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius and low temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius); Green and environmentally friendly, waste materials can be recycled and reused; Excellent surface hardness and scratch resistance; Easy to clean and maintain; It will not fade, lose its shine, or fail to open outdoors for 5-8 years. Outstanding impact resistance, suitable for installation in areas that require safety. Due to its light weight, it has low requirements for the load-bearing capacity of building objects and supports.
3. Application areas: A: Aerospace industry B: Highways C: Civil industry D: Advertising industry F: Sanitary industry G: Other forms of advertising
2、 Production process and classification of acrylic sheets
1. Acrylic board can be divided into cast board and extruded board according to production process, and can be divided into transparent board and semi transparent board (including dyed board and transparent board) according to transparency; According to performance, there are impact resistant boards, UV resistant boards, color boards (including black and white and color boards), ordinary boards, and special boards such as high impact resistant boards, flame retardant boards, frosted boards, metal effect boards, high wear-resistant boards, light guide boards, etc.
Casting board: high molecular weight, excellent rigidity, strength, and excellent chemical resistance. Therefore, it is more suitable for processing large-sized identification plaques, and the softening process takes slightly longer. The characteristics of this type of board are small batch processing, unparalleled flexibility in color system and surface texture effect, and complete product specifications, which are practical for various special purposes.
Extruded plate: Compared with cast plate, extruded plate has a lower molecular weight, slightly weaker mechanical properties, and higher flexibility. However, this feature is advantageous for bending and hot forming processing, with a shorter softening time. When dealing with large-sized sheets, it is beneficial for various rapid vacuum forming processes. Meanwhile, the thickness tolerance of the extruded plate is smaller than that of the cast plate. Due to the large-scale automated production of extruded plates, the color and specifications are difficult to adjust, which limits the diversity of product specifications.
2. Acrylic also has a type called recycled board, which uses recycled acrylic scraps, undergoes thermal degradation to obtain recycled MMA (methyl methacrylate) monomer, and is then obtained through chemical polymerization reaction. After strict process flow, pure MMA monomers can be obtained again, with no difference in quality compared to newly synthesized monomers. But the produced degradation monomers have low purity, and after the board is formed, the quality and performance are very poor.
Summary: Extrusion plates use granular raw materials, which are melted at high temperatures and extruded into shape, while casting plates are directly cast from MMA monomers (liquid). Although the extruded plate has a relatively smooth and polished appearance, it completes polymerization during the formation of granular raw materials. When processed into sheet metal, its structure and performance are weak, and it is not suitable as a material for outdoor identification products. It is only suitable for indoor products such as crystal characters or product brackets. In addition, due to the fact that most extruded boards do not have UV protection function, their outdoor service life is not comparable to that of cast boards. The color will gradually fade and they are easily brittle until they break. Casting board is a process of structural polymerization completed during the processing of sheet metal, during which ultraviolet absorbers are added, which has extremely high strength and UV function. Its outdoor service life can last for more than 5 years or even 10 years, and the color remains bright and new during use.
3、 Simple distinction and identification method between pure new material acrylic board and recycled board
1. Pure new material transparent acrylic board:
A: Transmittance greater than 92%, transparent and colorless at the cross-section
B: Excellent UV resistance, with no fading, loss of light, yellowing, or cracking for 5-8 years outdoors
C: High surface hardness, comparable to aluminum and brass
D: Excellent resistance to cracking and chemicals
E: High quality protective film provides sufficient protection
2. Recycled material, recycled board, transparent acrylic board:
A: Transmittance less than 86%, yellowing at the cross-section
B: The anti UV performance is very poor, and it will turn yellow after six months. It is easy to crack under sunlight exposure
C: Low surface hardness, easy to scratch
D: Easy to crack
E: The quality of the protective film is poor and prone to aging and deterioration.
Identification method:
1. Recycling board with recycled materials:
A: The appearance of the recycled board is yellowing.
B: The surface is easily scratched, and cutting produces a stimulating odor.
C: During hot forming heating, it is easy to produce bubble deformation.
D: Sensitive to paint and ink, prone to silver lines or cracks.
E: When burning, bubbles emit black smoke and have a pungent odor. two
2. Pure new material acrylic board:
A: The appearance color of the recycled board is pure, especially evident from the cross-section.
B: Excellent surface hardness and scratch resistance, cutting is non irritating and odorless.
C: During hot forming heating, it is not easy to produce bubbles and deformation.
D: Stable adaptability to paint and ink.
E: When burning, there is no foaming, no black smoke, and no irritating odor.
Casting board and extrusion board are both types of acrylic product materials, and their materials can be of other colors (white, black, red, apple green, etc. are commonly used). Their transparency is impressive, comparable to that of crystals.
difference:
1. The transparency of the casting board is over 98%, while that of the extrusion board is only over 92%.
2. The edges of the casting board are free of blemishes and very transparent; And the edges of the extruded board will have pockmarks, and the B-grade board edges of the extruded board can be seen to be yellow and black, while the A-grade board edges of the extruded board will have a more transparent black feeling
3. The tolerance of the casting board increases with the required thickness (see what is the tolerance of acrylic sheet), while the tolerance of the extrusion board can be controlled within± 0.1mm
4. The casting board will choose 1.83M * 1.22M and 2.44M * 1.22M, and the length and width of the casting board can be freely selected (but not too wide, as this will cause deformation and increase tolerance)
